Ms. Fix-It, That’s Me

When the zipper on my boots broke after a few years, I was worried that they were done for, and I was really upset. Not only were they pretty expensive (decent veggie shoes usually are), but they were my favorites: waterproof, attractive, comfortable...

Random Tip: Recycle and Be Rewarded at Kiehl’s

I just found out about this Kiehl's program to recycle their empty containers. For every ten empties we bring in, we get one free full-sized product. I'm not sure that recycling at Kiehl's is any better than through my town, but I'm always up for free stuff. And I like the idea of companies being responsible for their products from cradle to grave.

Book Review: Eating Animals

My boss just lent me Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer. Anyone who's interested in this topic will already know the gist of this book, if not the specific examples. But I think it's still important to read because we periodically need to be reminded exactly why we have the convictions that we do.

Random Tip: Recycle Jeans into Insulation

Gap is offering 30% off to people who bring in their old jeans to be recycled into insulation. Seriously—insulation. That's pretty cool. I wouldn't do this with perfectly good jeans that just don't fit (that's what the Salvation Army is for), but it seems like a good end-of-life for the jeans I can't even patch anymore. Thanks for the tip, Lesley!

Truly Low-Flow Showerheads

Ironically, we converted our toilet to dual-flush before we switched to a low-flow showerhead. Changing showerheads is one of the easiest things people can do to save water and energy. According to the EPA, showers represent 17% of indoor water use. And it's heated water, too.

Weatherization Barnraising

This weekend we participated in a weatherization barnraising organized by the Cambridge Home Energy Efficiency Team (HEET). No, we weren't weatherizing an actual barn; neighbors from all over Cambridge got together to help make two homes more energy efficient. We worked on things all over the houses, from installing aerators and low-flow showerheads to insulating.

So the links this week are a little heavy on the makeup, because that's what's on my mind. I promise to be all butch again next week.
Looking for Green Makeup

I've never been a girly girl, but I decided I couldn't hit 30 without even knowing how to wear makeup. So this week I made an appointment for a consultation at Sephora. I chose Sephora not just because they're across the street from where I work; they also have a "natural" label for some makeup lines.

Greenwashing – Car Washing, That Is

We finally washed our car this weekend. After three trips to Maine in a month, it really needed it. I'm happy to report that, much like with dishes, the most environmentally friendly way to wash is also the laziest.

Fun with a Slow Cooker

I got a slow cooker weeks ago but haven't had the chance (or the guts) to make anything with it yet. Since I often have more energy first thing in the morning than directly after work, I think it'll help me actually cook on weekdays. And compared to the oven, slow cookers use such a low wattage that they save energy. Bonus!

Converting to a Dual-Flush Toilet

No, we didn't get a new toilet. We converted our old one with a One2flush kit. Turning the handle one way makes a half flush and turning it the other makes a full flush. And it's easy to increase or decrease the water levels of both of them if necessary by adjusting the settings on the flapper.

Smell My Armpit—I Dare You

I'm afraid this is the post that will push me over the line into hippy craziness, but I'm so surprised at the effectiveness of the Crystal deodorant I switched to that I don't care. I know, I know, using a rock as deodorant? Wetting it down before rubbing it on my armpit did take some getting used to. But it works. Like all deodorants, rather than being absorbed into the pores, the Crystal deodorant stays on top of the skin and makes it too inhospitable an environment for the growth of the bacteria that's the source of that particular rank smell.

How to Clean up a Broken Thermometer

Jason was sick this weekend, and while he was shaking down the thermometer, it slipped out of his hand, flew across the room, and broke into a zillion pieces—or so I thought. It was actually four pieces of glass and a zillion tiny beads of mercury.

Big Belly Update

I have to admit, I feel kind of bad trashing the Big Belly solar compactors that have been popping up around the city. In theory they're good. And while there are no replacements yet for the ones on Newbury Street or Mass. Ave., I've seen some new models in Copley, Central, and Harvard squares. These ones are a new design and seem to be getting much less disgusting.

Festival of Frugality #215

I'm happy to host the Festival of Frugality this week. Back when we graduated from college, Jason and I were $100,000 in debt, and personal finance bloggers were a great source of advice and inspiration. Nine years later, we've paid off all our debt (yay!), but a lot of their frugal tips can be applicable to our conservation goals, as well.
