Friday Green Links – 3/12
After reading Eating Animals this week, a lot of my links are food related. I would say enjoy, but it’s a little depressing…
- Are We Headed for a Subprime Mortgage Crisis of Food? – Sustainable Food. The dangers of monoculture. This sort of thing already happened to the Gros Michel banana decades ago. (Thanks, Andy.)
- The Poultry Problem – Boston Locavores. In case you didn’t catch this link in the comments to my Eating Animals post… Did you know most poultry nowadays are bred to be so ungainly that they can’t even reproduce? (Thanks, Danielle.)
- The At-Home Preservation Trend – Slate. I admit to being a bit of a dilettante. But is there anything wrong with an increase in home canning, however impractical? (Thanks, Danielle.)
- Tricks to Keep Your Device’s Battery Going and Going – New York Times. I don’t have a smart phone, but for those of you who do… And these tips can be extended to any electronic device.
- Hand Dryer or Paper Towels – Pays to Live Green. Spoiler alert: it’s the hand dryer.
- House Approves Ban on Cutting Dog, Cat Vocal Chords – Cambridge Chronicle. Seriously, do people still do this? I can’t believe Massachusetts hasn’t outlawed this already.
- Cambridge Launching Green Jobs Program – Boston Globe. Training sessions start in April.
- Deal to Save Everglades May Help Sugar Firm – New York Times. On the one hand, Florida’s buying 72,000 acres. On the other hand, it’s less than half of what they originally intended.
That’s all for this week. As usual, if you come across something interesting, send it my way.

I may ask to borrow that at some point this year. You know, now that my freezer’s empty-ish again…

The canning article makes a point–which is why I’m way more interested in doing some mass freezing this winter. We have a vacuum sealer!
