Saturday Green Links – 11/4
It’s been a few weeks since I’ve posted links, so there are a lot. Enjoy!
- How to really annoy the banks and finance companies – YouTube. You may have already seen this video, but I had to pass it on. I think this is a great way to make a point about junk mail, too. (Thanks, Dave!)
- Is the Occupy Movement Anti-Democratic? – Slate. “Actually, this isn’t what democracy looks like. This is what freedom of speech looks like. Democracy looks a lot more boring.”
- Peer Pressure for Sustainability: Positive Behavior Change via Social Norms – Practically Green. We designed some social norms posters for Berklee’s Counseling and Advising Center, showing that Berklee students use less drugs and alcohol than the national average. Why not use this idea for sustainability, too?
- $1.4 Million in Massachusetts Recycling Grants Announced – Boston Globe. Cambridge got a grant for its residential food waste collection pilot program.
- Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency: Get Em While They’re Hot! – Energy Circle. The tax credits are usually 10% of the cost, so keep those receipts.
- Oil and Gas Had Help. Why Not Renewables? – New York Times. “Tax incentives for fossil fuels surpassed $12 billion during the price spikes of the late 1970s and early ’80s.”
- Auto Pilot – Zero Waste Home. She’s right—trying to keep up a zero-waste (or reduced-waste) lifestyle can be exhausting if your new efforts don’t eventually become habits you don’t have to think about.
- Meat Eater’s Guide to Climate Change and Health – Green Phone Booth. Cheese is the third-worst carbon emitter, worse than pigs, fish, or poultry. Ouch.
- Harvard’s own version of healthy plate draws criticism – Boston Globe. Hehe, I love this.
- From sea to sushi bar, a system open to abuse – Boston Globe. I guess the Monterey Bay guide doesn’t help much if the restaurants are lying about what fish they’re serving.
- Canning #2: Tomatoes – Farm Share Stories. I think I need a food mill before I start canning tomatoes in earnest, but I really want to.
- Canning #3: Applesauce – Farm Shares Stories. Applesauce is probably the most successful canning experiment we’ve ever done. Well, either that or jelly.
That’s it this week. As always, if you come across anything interesting, send it along.
